How to Play

RUNO – Official Rules.

A fast-moving tile game of strategy, timing, and smart plays.

🎯 Objective

Empty Your Rack First

Play tiles into valid sets on the table
and be the first player to use all your tiles.

If the draw pile runs out before anyone finishes,
the player with the lowest remaining score wins.

🧩 Components

What’s Included

106 Tiles 1–13 in 4 colors
2 Jokers Wild tiles
4 Player Racks One per player
Draw Pile Shared center pile

Setup

  1. Shuffle all tiles face down.
  2. Each player draws 14 tiles and places them on their rack.
  3. Remaining tiles become the draw pile.
  4. Choose a starting player randomly.

Valid Sets

Group

A Group is 3–4 tiles with the same number in different colors.

7 7 7

Run

A Run is 3 or more consecutive numbers in the same color.

5 6 7 8

1 is always low. Some families may allow 1 to follow 13 as a house rule.

Jokers

Jokers are wild tiles and may represent any tile in a set.

If a Joker is replaced with the correct tile, it must be reused immediately during the same turn.

How a Turn Works

Players take turns clockwise. On your turn, you must try to play exactly 1 tile.

1. Add a Tile

Add 1 tile from your rack to any existing valid set on the table.

2. Draw a Tile

If you cannot play, draw 1 tile from the pile. If it fits immediately, you may play it right away.

3. Split a Large Set

If a set has 4 or more tiles, remove 1 tile, leave at least 3 valid tiles behind, and combine it with 1 tile from your rack to start a new set.

The Unlock Rule

If an entire round passes and no player adds or starts a set, the next player may freely start a brand-new set from their rack.

This keeps the game moving and prevents long stalls.

Winning the Game

The first player to empty their rack shouts:

RUNO!

That player wins immediately.

If the draw pile runs out first, count remaining points on each rack. Lowest score wins.

Scoring

1–9Face Value
10–1310 Points
Joker30 Points

Quick Reference

  • Add 1 tile to a set
  • Draw 1 tile if stuck
  • Split a 4+ set to create a new set
  • Reuse Jokers immediately if replaced
  • Sets must always stay valid

Remember

  • Sets must always stay valid
  • You may only remove from sets of 4+
  • Jokers must be reused immediately if replaced
  • The Unlock Rule activates after a full dead round

Strategy Tips

  • Keep flexible middle numbers when possible
  • Large sets are vulnerable to splitting
  • Watch Jokers carefully
  • Sometimes drawing is smarter than forcing a play
  • Low-point racks matter if the pile runs out
